A green protein smoothie in a glass.

Most green smoothies hide a banana in them and stop being low-carb. This one gets its body from avocado and its freshness from cucumber, mint and lemon instead.

The vanilla protein rounds the greens out. If you are suspicious of green drinks, this is the one to start with.

This is number 2 of our top 20 high protein, low carb smoothies.

method

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender, then pack in the spinach, kale, cucumber, avocado, mint and lemon juice.

  2. Add the protein powder and ice. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds, until completely smooth. Greens take the full 45 seconds.

  3. Taste and adjust: a few more ice cubes for thicker, a splash more liquid for thinner. Drink cold.

chef's tips

  • Blend until there are no flecks. A grainy green smoothie is a texture problem, not a flavor one.
  • Frozen spinach works and makes it colder; use a small handful.
  • Use a protein powder with no added sugar. It is the difference between 3 and 15 grams of carbs per scoop.
